Equipment

  • 1 Small bowl

Ingredients

  • 3 ounces Sake a Japanese rice wine, lends a delicate, slightly sweet note to the sauce. Its gentle flavor profile enhances the overall complexity, creating a well-balanced base for the teriyaki sauce.
  • 6 ounces Soy Sauce adds depth and saltiness to the sauce. It provides a robust savory base, balancing the sweetness of other ingredients and ensuring a well-rounded, flavorful teriyaki sauce.
  • 1/2 tablespoon Sesame Oil - Fragrant and nutty sesame oil imparts a rich, toasted aroma and a depth of flavor to the sauce. Its distinct taste adds a subtle complexity, enhancing the teriyaki sauce with its savory notes.
  • 6 tablespoons Light Brown Sugar adds a rich, molasses-infused sweetness. As it melts into the sauce, it creates a velvety texture and a delightful sweetness, elevating the teriyaki sauce with its smooth, sugary notes.
  • 1 tablespoon Water - Water helps balance the consistency of the sauce ensuring it's not too thick or too thin. It aids in dissolving the sugar and cornstarch, creating a cohesive and smooth texture for the teriyaki sauce.
  • 1/2 Clove Garlic - Pungent and aromatic garlic brings a savory depth and a robust flavor to the sauce. Its earthy undertones add complexity, providing a rich umami taste that complements the sweetness of the sugar.

  • 4.5 ounces Mirin a sweet Japanese rice wine, imparts a gentle sweetness and a mild acidity to the sauce. Its nuanced flavor profile balances the savory and sweet elements, adding a harmonious complexity to the teriyaki sauce.

Instructions

  • Take a small bowl. add the cornstarch and water to it. Then, stir to combine. This will avoid cornstarch lumps.
  • Pour the cornstarch mixture into the bowl, whisk it, and heat until the sauce thickens.
  • Remember, the sauce can go from simmer to boil very quickly. So, you should be attentive and ready to lower the heat at a moment you notice it. It usually only takes 5-10 minutes total, depending on the size of your saucepan. Once it reaches the desired consistency, take it off the stove to cool.
