If you’re looking for a classic, homestyle recipe that will bring your family around the table, Brenda Gantt Chicken & Dumplings is an old-fashioned favorite!
Prepare the chicken by combining garlic, butter, and onion in a large pot. Simmer over medium heat for about 5 minutes until the onion is softened. Add in the chicken thighs and season with salt & pepper to taste. Cover the pot and simmer for 25-30 minutes or until cooked through.
Mix together buttermilk, flour, baking powder, and baking soda in a medium bowl. Roll out the dough onto a lightly floured surface and cut into 1-inch pieces. Drop the dumplings into the pot with chicken and cover for 25 minutes.
When the dumplings are cooked through, add heavy cream to the mixture and stir to combine. Simmer for an additional 5 minutes or until the sauce has thickened. Serve while warm and enjoy!
Notes
Make sure the chicken is fully cooked before adding in the dumplings.
Stir in the heavy cream at the very end, so it doesn’t curdle.
Be careful not to overcook the dumplings as they can become dense and rubbery.
