Equipment

  • Medium Bowl
  • 9 inch pie plate
  • pastry blender

Ingredients

For the Crumple:

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cups Melted Butter unsalted
  • 3 tsp salt
  • 2/3 cup light brown sugar

For the Crust

For the filling:

  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon (cinnamon powder)
  • 6 tsp freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 8 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 8 apples

Instructions

  • Make the crust
In a medium bowl, mix together 2 cups of flour, 1 cup of butter (cut into pieces), 1 tablespoon of salt, and 1 tablespoon of sugar until everything is well combined.
Add in 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar or white vinegar and 1 tablespoon of ice water and mix until the dough starts to come together.
Add in the beaten egg (with the same amount of water) and continue mixing until you have a smooth, pliable dough.
Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and place it in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes (or up to overnight).
  • Prepare the crumble
In a medium bowl, mix together 3/4 cup of all-purpose flour, 1/3 cup brown sugar, and 1/2 tablespoon salt.
Add in 6 tablespoons of butter (cut into pieces) and work it into the mixture until everything is well combined.
Wrap the crumple in plastic wrap and place it in the refrigerator until ready to use.
  • Prepare the apples
Peel and core 4 medium-sized apples. Cut them into thin slices and place them in a large bowl.
Add 1 tablespoon of lemon juice, 1 1/2 tablespoons of cinnamon powder, and 1/4 cup of sugar to the sliced apples and mix everything together until well combined.
  • Assemble the pie
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough to fit a 9-inch (23 cm) pie dish. Place the dough in the pie dish and press it into the sides of the pan.
Pour the apples into the dish and spread them out evenly. Sprinkle with some extra sugar if desired.
Take the crumple out of the refrigerator and sprinkle it over the top of the apples.
Bake for 45 minutes or until golden and bubbly.
Let cool before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • For a flaky crust, make sure to use cold butter.
  • If you want a sweeter pie, add some more sugar to the crumple or apples.
  • You can also top the pie with ice cream for an extra special treat!
  • To prevent your pie from getting too soggy on the bottom, make sure to pre-bake it for 15 minutes before adding the filling.
  • If you want a healthier version of this recipe, you can use whole wheat flour instead of all-purpose flour. You can also replace the butter with coconut oil for a vegan version.
  • Finally, make sure to let the pie cool before cutting into it - otherwise, all of the juices will run out and your pie won't be as delicious!
