Preheat your oven to 350°F and generously grease a 9x5-inch baking pan with oil or butter.
To make the dates mixture, place them in a medium bowl and pour boiling water over top.
Stir in baking soda until evenly mixed and let sit for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
In another large bowl, blend together sugar and egg until light and creamy.
Add the dates mixture, all-purpose flour, baking powder, salt, walnuts and butter to the bowl. Mix with a spatula or spoon until everything is completely combined.
Pour batter into prepared pan and bake for 25-30 minutes until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
Let cool before slicing and serving.
