Equipment

Ingredients

  • 1/2 tsp dried basil
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 3 tsp olive oil
  • 1 minced garlic clove
  • 14 oz crushed tomatoes
  • Pinch of dried oregano
  • 1/4 onion finely chopped
  • 15 oz tomato puree
  • Salt to taste
  • 1/2 tsp dried parsley
  • Pinch of freshly ground black pepper

Instructions

  • Heat a generous amount of olive oil in a large pot over medium heat and add the minced garlic and diced onion. Sauté for about five minutes until both ingredients are softened.
  • Pour in the crushed tomatoes, tomato puree, freshly chopped basil leaves, finely chopped parsley, ground black pepper, dried oregano, salt to taste, and a pinch of sugar. Stir everything together and bring it to a simmer.
  • Lower the heat to low and let the sauce reduce for 30-45 minutes, stirring every now and then. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed.
  • Serve over freshly cooked spaghetti or your favorite type of pasta for a delicious meal!

Notes

  • To get a richer flavor, let the sauce simmer for longer.
  • For an extra layer of flavor, you can add a tablespoon of minced fresh parsley or basil at the end of cooking.
  • To make this sauce vegetarian, substitute vegetable broth for the olive oil.
  • To kick up the flavor of this sauce, add a tablespoon of capers or olives at the end of cooking.
  • For a thicker sauce, add a teaspoon of cornstarch dissolved in a tablespoon of water.
    • If you’re short on time, you can also use store-bought tomato sauce to save time. Simply add your favorite herbs and seasonings to customize them to your taste.
