Instructions
Step1: Mix The Ingredients:
In a big bowl, mix together mashed potatoes, flour, cornstarch, salt, pepper, onion powder, dry bread crumbs, and garlic powder. Stir until it becomes a smooth mixture.
Step 2: Roll Out The Mixture:
Sprinkle a little flour on a clean surface.
Take the potato mixture and roll it out with a rolling pin until it’s about 1/4-inch thick.
Step 3: Cut Out The Shapes:
Use a round cookie cutter (about 2 inches in diameter) to cut out circles from the rolled-out mixture.
If you have any leftover scraps, you can re-roll them and cut out more circles.
Step 4: Create The Faces:
Use a drinking straw to make two small circles for eyes on each round.
Use a spoon to shape a smile or mouth on each round.
Step 5: Heat The Oil:
In a large skillet or Dutch oven, pour enough canola oil so it’s about 1/2 inch deep.
Heat the oil to 350°F (175°C).
Step 6: Fry The Faces:
Carefully place a few rounds into the hot oil at a time.
Fry them until both sides are golden brown, which should take about 1-2 minutes for each side.
Step 7: Drain And Season:
Take the fried Smiley Face Fries out of the oil and let them drain on paper towels.
Sprinkle them with a bit more salt to taste.
