Equipment

Ingredients

  • 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda serving as a leavening agent that creates air pockets in the caramel, resulting in a light and crisp texture.
  • 1/2 cup of packed Imperial Sugar Light Brown Sugar providing a deep and rich sweetness that caramelizes beautifully, adding a caramel undertone to the Puffcorn.
  • 1/4 teaspoon of butter extract/flavoring adding a buttery and creamy essence that complements the Puffcorn and enhances the overall flavor profile. The butter extract creates a decadent and indulgent taste experience.
  • 1/2 teaspoon of maple extract contributing a delightful and distinct maple flavor that brings a touch of warmth and richness to the Puffcorn.
  • 1/4 cup of light corn syrup adding a touch of sweetness and viscosity to the caramel mixture, ensuring a sticky and glossy coating on the Puffcorn.
  • 4-5 ounces of plain or butter-flavored Puffcorn recommended: Old Dutch, offering a light and airy texture that provides the perfect base for the sweet and buttery coating.
  • 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract infusing a warm and aromatic flavor that enhances the overall sweetness and adds depth to the caramel coating.
  • 1/2 cup of unsalted butter bringing a rich and creamy element to the recipe, ensuring a smooth and velvety consistency in the caramel coating.

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to an exact temperature of 350°F/176°C.
  • Combine together butter, light brown sugar and light corn syrup in a medium sized saucepan. Stir continuously until the combination is melted evenly and bubbling lightly. Remove from heat source and stir in baking soda as well as both extracts until blended.
  • Place Puffcorn into a large bowl and pour the butter and syrup mix over it. Mix carefully until each piece of Puffcorn is evenly coated with the liquid mixture.
  • Place the Puffcorn onto a parchment paper-lined baking sheet in a uniform layer. Bake for 10 minutes or until a golden brown hue has been achieved.
  • Allow the Beaver Nuggets to cool down completely before being served.

Notes

  • For extra sweetness, dust the Beaver Nuggets with powdered sugar after baking.
  • You can also add other flavorings such as cinnamon or nutmeg for a unique twist on this classic snack.
  • If you want to make these nuggets vegan, use vegan butter and substitute the light corn syrup with maple syrup or agave nectar.
  • To make your nuggets extra crunchy, bake them at a higher temperature.
  • Try adding some dried fruit or nuts to the mix for added texture and flavor.
  • For a spicier version, add some cayenne pepper or chili powder to the butter mixture before baking.
