Equipment

  •  Biscuit cutter
  • Skillet
  • Measuring spoons
  • bowl
  • Cups

Ingredients

  • 6 cups of all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup baking powder
  • 2 tbsp Unsalted butter
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup coconut oil or vegetable shortening
  • 4/3 cup buttermilk (regular or low-fat)

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C). Grease a baking sheet with butter and set aside.
  • In a large bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, baking powder, salt, butter, and vegetable shortening. With a fork or pastry cutter, work the ingredients together until you have a crumbly mixture.
  • Add in the buttermilk and mix until a soft dough forms.
  • Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead until it is pliable about 10 times.
  • Roll out the dough to ½ inch thickness. Using a biscuit cutter or glass, cut out the biscuits and place them on the prepared baking sheet.
  • Bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown. Serve warm with butter, jam, or honey!
  • Store leftover biscuits in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven before serving.

Notes

• Use cold butter and shortening when preparing the dough. This will ensure that your biscuits have a nice flaky texture.
• Be careful not to overwork the dough as this will result in tough, dense biscuits.
• If you don’t have self-rising flour on hand, you can make your own by combining 1 cup all-purpose flour, 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder, and ¾ teaspoon salt.
• Substitute the buttermilk for regular dairy milk or a non-dairy alternative if needed.
• Experiment with adding herbs or spices to your biscuit dough for a unique flavor twist!
