Ingredients

  • Vegetable oil
  • 2 cups – Buttermilk
  • 2 pcs – Onion
  • 2 cups – Self Rising Flour
  • 4 tablespoons – Sugar
  • 1 tablespoon – Salt
  • 6 pcs – Green Onions
  • 2 cups – Yellow Cornmeal
  • 2 tablespoons – Garlic Powder
  • 1 tablespoon – Cayenne Pepper
  • 2 pcs – Eggs

Instructions

  • Combine self-rising flour, cornmeal, sugar, salt, garlic powder, and cayenne pepper.
  • Beat eggs, and mix with buttermilk.
  • Combine wet mix with dry mix until just combined.
  • Gently fold in diced and green onions.
  • Heat vegetable oil to 375°F (190°C).
  • Drop spoonfuls of batter into hot oil, and fry for 2-3 mins per side until golden and crispy.
  • Remove, and drain on paper towels. Serve hot with preferred dipping sauce or as a side for seafood, BBQ, or Southern meals.

Notes

  • For best results, use a deep fryer or a heavy pot for frying the hush puppies. This will ensure they cook evenly and have a uniform golden brown color.
  • Make sure to keep an eye on the oil temperature while frying. If it gets too hot, the hush puppies may burn on the outside before being fully cooked on the inside.
  • To make the hush puppies even more flavorful, you can add cooked crumbled bacon or grated cheddar cheese to the batter.
  • Leftover hush puppies can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, place them on a baking sheet and bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for about 10 minutes.
  • Serve the hush puppies with your favorite dipping sauce, such as a tangy remoulade or a creamy ranch dressing. They also go well with seafood dishes like fried fish or shrimp.
  • If you don’t have buttermilk on hand, you can make a substitute by mixing 1 cup of milk with 1 tablespoon of lemon juice or vinegar. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes before using in the recipe.
  • For a twist on traditional hush puppies, try using different types of cornmeal, such as blue or white cornmeal. You can also add other ingredients like diced jalapenos or chopped herbs for added flavor and texture.
