Equipment

Ingredients

  • 2 Cups plain flour
  • 2 Tablespoon Bobs Red Mill Active Dry Yeast, Recommended
  • 3 Tablespoon brown sugar or white granulated sugar
  • 1/2 Tablespoon Salt
  • 3 Tablespoon cocoa powder (we like Dutch-process)
  • 1 cup Luke Warm Water
  • 2 Tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 cup chocolate chips (or chunks, or chopped chocolate)
  • Chopped nuts, such as pecans or walnuts
  • 1 cup Hot Whipping Cream
  • sprinkles for garnish
  • grated chocolate
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, combine the flour, active dry yeast, sugar, salt, and cocoa powder together until mixed evenly.
  • Make a well in the center of the mixture and add oil and lukewarm water. Mix with hands until all ingredients have come together to form a ball of dough.
  • On a lightly floured surface, knead the dough for about 5 minutes until it has become smooth and elastic. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let the dough sit in a warm place for 1 hour.
  • After an hour, roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to about 1/4-inch thickness. Use a cookie cutter or biscuit cutter to cut out the donuts.
  • In a large skillet over medium heat, pour in enough oil for deep-frying. Once the oil is hot enough, gently drop the cut donuts into the oil and fry for about 2 minutes on each side.
  • Remove the donuts from the oil and let them cool slightly before topping with grated chocolate, chopped nuts, sprinkles, or hot whipping cream.

Notes

-It’s important to make sure the oil is hot enough before adding in the donuts.
-If you are using a cookie cutter or biscuit cutter to cut out your donuts, wet the edges of the dough with water so it will help them hold their shape better.
-Don’t overcrowd the skillet with the donuts when frying as this will lower the temperature of the oil and your donuts won’t cook properly.
-If you want to make sure your donuts are cooked through, use a thermometer to check that the oil has reached 375°F (190°C).
-Let your donuts cool before topping them with grated chocolate or hot whipping cream.
