Ingredients

  • 1 small chopped onion
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 cup self rising flour
  • 1 1/2 cups self rising cornmeal
  • 6 vegetable oil - or as needed for frying
  • 1 buttermilk
  • 1 lightly beaten egg

Instructions

  • In a bowl, mix together the onion, salt, baking soda, flour and cornmeal.
  • Heat oil in a saucepan over medium-high heat until it reaches 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  • In another bowl, mix together the buttermilk and egg.
  • Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix together.
  • Drop tablespoons of the batter into the hot oil and fry until golden brown, about 2 minutes per side.
  • Remove the hush puppies from the oil and drain on paper towels. Serve immediately.

Notes

- Make sure to use self-rising flour and cornmeal for best results.
- Try adding different herbs and spices to the batter for a flavor boost.
- When frying, make sure that the oil is hot before adding the hush puppies as this will help them cook quickly and evenly.
