Wontons with Spicy Peanut Sauce

Where Did I First Try Wontons with Spicy Peanut Sauce?

I first tasted this delectable dish on a trip to Thailand. I was visiting my family who had moved there, and they decided to take us out for dinner one night.

Immediately as we arrived at the restaurant, it seemed like an oasis in the midst of all the hustle and bustle of Bangkok city life. The exterior of the small restaurant had brightly colored paintings on the walls, and the air was filled with fragrant aromas of spices and herbs.

I quickly realized that this restaurant specialized in local Thai food. We were welcomed by an incredibly friendly waitress who helped guide us through the menu.

I noticed a dish called “Wontons with Spicy Peanut Sauce” and my curiosity was piqued. After a few moments of contemplation, I decided to give it a try and I’m so glad I did!

The wontons arrived at our table in a steamer basket with spicy peanut sauce on the side. The wontons were delicate yet chewy and filled with ground pork that had been seasoned with ginger, soy sauce, and garlic.

The exterior was thin yet packed with flavor as it had been lightly browned from the steam.  When I dipped a wonton into the spicy peanut sauce, my taste buds were enchanted.

The sweetness of the brown sugar combined with the spice of chili oil created a unique flavor that tantalized my taste buds. As I savored each bite, I was in awe of how simple ingredients could come together to create something so exquisite.

Since then, I have been able to recreate this delicious dish at home and every time it brings back fond memories of the wonderful hospitality my family received at that restaurant.

Whenever I make this dish for friends and family they are always delighted by the flavors and textures. Wontons with Spicy Peanut Sauce is sure to become a favorite and I recommend that you give it a try!

Cooking Directions

Step 1

Place the ground pork, garlic, ginger, green onions, cornstarch, soy sauce, sesame oil, and egg in a bowl. Mix all of the ingredients together until evenly combined. Taste and season with salt and pepper as desired.

Step 2

Lay out 25 dumpling skins on a clean cutting board or work surface. Place a heaping teaspoon of the filling in the center of each skin. Lightly wet the edges of the skins with water and fold them into the desired shape.

Step 4

Once the dumplings are cooked through, remove them from the steamer and transfer them to a serving plate. Sprinkle with scallions and red pepper flakes. Serve warm with Spicy Peanut Sauce for dipping.

Cooking Tips

  • To save time, you can use store-bought wonton wrappers instead of making them from scratch.
  • For a vegetarian version, replace the ground pork with finely chopped vegetables or tofu.
  • Adjust the spiciness of the peanut sauce by adding more or less hot chili oil, according to your preference.

What Ingredients Can I Replace or Substitute While Making It?

  • If you’re not a fan of pork, you can use ground chicken, beef, or shrimp for the dumpling filling.
  • Swap hot chili oil for chili flakes or Sriracha if you prefer a milder spiciness.
  • Almond butter or cashew butter can be used instead of peanut butter for a different nutty flavor.
